Paper Mill pH Probe Cleaning Before Dosing Resumes

2026-11-02

Finish paper mill pH probe cleaning with two checks before releasing the dosing loop. Test the serviced electrode in reference solutions, then compare its installed reading with an independent meter on fresh water from the same mixed zone. Keep automatic dosing under the mill’s maintenance procedure until the shift operator accepts both results. Specify a mount and sampling point that allow that sequence during production.

Why a fouled electrode can look healthy

As fibers collect around the bulb, the layer can retain liquor from an earlier part of the run. The host continues receiving updates while the pH at the bulb responds slowly to the chest. A controller acting on that lag can keep calling for chemical after the bulk water has already moved toward the setpoint. When cleaning exposes the bulb to fresh liquor, the next reading may jump even if the process has changed very little during the service itself.

Distinguish the time of the last successful communication from the time of the last trustworthy measurement. A fresh register value obtained while the electrode is in rinse water belongs to the maintenance record. It has no place in a dosing calculation. The control description needs to cover this interval even where the sensor stays connected throughout withdrawal.

Which specifications matter for paper mill pH probe cleaning?

Use the model specifications to size the host and mounting interface and to judge whether the electrode merits a trial at the intended control point. A range that covers the chest pH does not establish resistance to the mill’s cleaner, furnish additives or exposure conditions. Obtain the delivered assembly’s chemical limits before selecting the service procedure.

Lift-out pH probe or sample loop for a fiber-bearing chest?

OptionWhat it providesWhat to specify
Lift-out immersion mountDirect contact with mixed tank waterSpecify reach, lifting clearance and a safe place to rinse. A probe that operators cannot withdraw during production will be difficult to verify.
Isolatable sample loopAccessible probe and nearby sample tapCheck that fibers pass through the takeoff and that operators can recognize a blocked line. Record transport delay before using the signal for dosing.
Independent grab checkA second reading on the same waterProvide a safe tap and a calibrated reference meter. A sample from another chest cannot settle a disagreement about the installed point.

Start with the mixed point the controller needs to represent. If that point can be reached from the operating platform, a lift-out arrangement avoids transporting fiber-rich liquor through another line. Test whether the operator can withdraw the wet assembly without pulling the connector or leaning over the chest. Where a guard or changing level rules out safe access, evaluate a loop against the same process point.

Draw every branch between the takeoff and the probe. An open drain on a bypass can show flow while an isolated measuring branch contains old liquor. Locate the means of observing flow on the measuring branch itself. Put a tap there for direct comparison and retain access to the source for a separate test of sample transport.

pH probe fouling during fiber carryover and grade changes

Fiber carryover increases while the chest pH trend goes flat

Take paired readings at the loop outlet and on the installed probe while the branch is flowing. Agreement at that point only establishes what both instruments see in the branch. If a separately checked sample from the mixed chest differs, inspect the takeoff, isolation valves and any screen upstream. Restoring flow can deliver a slug of old liquor before fresh sample arrives. Repeat the comparison after replacement and record the fiber condition under which the loop recovered.

The shift changes grade during a cleaning round

Label the last pre-service value with the old grade and record when the new furnish reached the chest. A grab taken at the chest during transition and a simultaneous loop reading may describe different parcels of water. Compare the probe with the adjacent tap first, then pair a source sample with a later loop sample using the observed transport delay. If flow changes with the grade, re-establish that delay. Leave the channel in maintenance while the team resolves which parcel each result represents.

pH reference checks before restoring automatic dosing

Locate the sensing point in a mixed zone clear of the injection plume and the floor. Mark the refitted depth and orientation on the holder. For a loop, identify valve positions for normal flow, isolation and flushing. Mark the tap used for each comparison on the piping drawing. The service technician should be able to reproduce the original point after replacing the electrode.

  1. Transfer control. The shift operator selects the approved alternate dosing arrangement before withdrawal. During the witnessed test, the integrator shows that the dosing calculation ignores the serviced input even when the host is still polling it. Record the last usable value separately from the live display.
  2. Check the electrode. The technician cleans and rinses using the instructions for the supplied assembly. Record reference solution identity, temperature and as-found response before making an adjustment. If response fails the delivered check, examine the solution and electrode, then repeat the procedure or fit a checked spare.
  3. Check the installed measurement. Restore the marked position or normal branch flow. Allow rinse water to clear. Take an adjacent sample and measure it promptly with an independently verified meter. Record both readings, times and sample temperature. Use a project tolerance based on the control margin, comparison method and instrument specifications. Display resolution alone gives no basis for accepting the pair.
  4. Release the channel. Demonstrate a loss of communication and its recovery. The host should flag missing or stale data, and recovery of polling alone should leave the service hold in effect. The shift operator reviews both checks and the current process condition before deliberately returning the loop to automatic duty.

If the buffer check passes but the installed pair fails, first repeat the independent measurement on fresh water from the probe location. Investigate residual rinse solution, a stagnant pocket or a different sampling depth before adjusting the probe. If both instruments agree locally but the chest value still differs after accounting for transport, repair or relocate the sample path. Calibration cannot correct the location of the takeoff.

RFQ scope for pH probe maintenance and dosing handback

The mill’s process sheet should identify grade changes, normal and upset chemistry, temperature, fiber loading, cleaning agents and the dosing response allowed during service. Attach the platform or piping drawing with access dimensions, water levels, sample points and cable route. Use those details to compare the installed cost of safe withdrawal with the valves, tubing and flow indication needed for a loop.

Separate supplied equipment from work by others. Assign the holder or loop and spare electrode to named line items. Identify who provides compatible service materials, the verified independent meter and the host configuration. The acceptance sheet should have spaces for solution results, paired process readings, grade, flow condition, last valid time, reviewer and release time. Retain the as-found observations across successive services to see whether fouling develops sooner on particular grades.

Frequently asked questions

Q1. Does a stable reading mean paper mill pH probe cleaning can wait?

A1. A stable reading alone is insufficient reason to delay cleaning. A steady number can come from a restricted sample path or an electrode partly isolated by fibers. Inspect the sensing end and confirm that fresh mixed process water reaches it. Check response in appropriate reference solutions before comparing a paired process sample. The purchase specification should provide withdrawal clearance and a nearby sampling point so the operator can distinguish a fouled electrode from an unrepresentative installation.

Q2. Does 0.01 pH resolution justify a narrow dosing deadband?

A2. Resolution describes the displayed increment, while the official YEX-S1-PH accuracy is ±0.1 pH under its specified conditions. Sampling differences, coating and the comparison instrument add further uncertainty. A deadband should therefore come from the process control requirement and a documented measurement assessment. Give the controls supplier the required operating margin and commissioning criteria instead of copying the last two digits of the display into the dosing logic.

Q3. What should be checked when online and handheld readings disagree?

A3. First compare the same water at the same time, with verified instruments and documented temperature conditions. A sample from another chest or a delayed sample can differ because of real process changes. Inspect fiber deposits, flow and the sampling delay before adjusting calibration. Record the reference checks and sample locations in the service report so the contractor can demonstrate which part of the measurement chain caused the disagreement.

Q4. When should a mill choose a lift-out immersion mount?

A4. Use immersion where a representative mixed zone is accessible and operators can withdraw the probe safely during normal production. The mount must return the sensing end to a repeatable position away from dosing plumes and the floor. Verify the complete lifting path with guards and cables installed. Specify the holder, strain relief and service arrangement as purchase items, rather than leaving removal to the commissioning crew.

Q5. When is an isolatable sample loop a better choice?

A5. A loop can improve isolation and service access when direct tank withdrawal is difficult, provided the takeoff continues to carry representative fiber-bearing water. Check blockage risk, transport delay and any settling or screening before the probe. Witness paired samples at the source and measuring point during a production change. Require accessible valves and a visible way to confirm sample flow in the bidder’s piping proposal.

Q6. Will adding a second probe solve a drifting control signal?

A6. A second instrument helps only when its condition and sampling path are understood. Two probes supplied by the same obstructed takeoff can agree while both miss the tank condition. Map the suspected failure first, then decide whether the project needs independent sample access, a reference instrument or a second fixed point. Ask bidders to explain which failure their proposed redundancy detects and how an operator verifies it.

Q7. Who authorizes return to automatic dosing after cleaning?

A7. The mill should name the person who reviews the instrument reference check, fresh-sample condition and paired process comparison. The controls contractor implements the maintenance state and a deliberate handback action. Cleaning alone should not silently restore a previously inhibited dosing signal. Include a witnessed service-and-return sequence in acceptance, with the time of withdrawal, last valid reading, comparison result and operator approval retained in the record.

Q8. What should the maintenance and spare-parts scope include?

A8. Specify the approved electrode assembly, cable, mounting fit, storage materials and reference solutions. Begin cleaning with the delivered instructions, then revise the interval from observed fouling and paired checks across relevant grades. A spare needs its own reference check and process comparison before dosing duty. Link the stores identifier to the approved configuration and obtain written replacement and support terms. The service record should distinguish calibration work from changes to sample delivery.

Summary

Choose lift-out service where the mixed zone is safely accessible. A loop earns its place only if it delivers representative liquor across the relevant grades. Match the YEX-S1-PH interface to the host and assess the supplied assembly against the mill’s chemistry. Define the mount, reference method, comparison point and service-state logic in the RFQ. Return dosing authority to the installed signal when the responsible operator can trace both a successful electrode check and a fresh process comparison.
