Water Quality Sensor Troubleshooting Guide: Common Problems and Solutions

2025-03-26

Why online water quality sensor data may become unstable

Online water quality sensors work in real field environments, so unstable data can be caused by several factors, including fouling, air bubbles, incorrect installation position, insufficient calibration, unstable power supply, wiring problems or communication settings. Before replacing a sensor, it is better to check the installation and system conditions step by step.

Common issue 1: The sensor value changes too quickly

If the value changes sharply within a short time, first check whether the probe is installed in a representative and stable water area. Strong flow impact, air bubbles, sediment disturbance or floating objects may affect readings. For pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors, also confirm whether calibration was completed correctly and whether the probe surface is clean.

Common issue 2: RS485 Modbus communication fails

For RS485 Modbus RTU sensors, check the power supply voltage, A/B wiring, device address, baud rate, parity and register address. Reversed A/B wires or different communication settings are common causes of failed data reading. If several sensors share one RS485 bus, confirm that each device uses a unique address.

Common issue 3: The sensor reading is slowly drifting

Sensor drift is often related to calibration, fouling or long-term exposure to harsh water conditions. pH and ion-selective sensors usually require periodic calibration. Optical sensors such as turbidity, chlorophyll or blue-green algae sensors need cleaning when sediment or biofilm covers the optical window.

Common issue 4: The sensor works in clean water but not on site

This usually means the site condition is more complex than the test environment. Wastewater, aquaculture ponds, algae-rich lakes and high-turbidity rivers may require more frequent cleaning, better protection, a different installation position or an anti-fouling design. Photos or videos of the installation site help YexSensor provide more accurate technical support.

Information to provide when requesting support

Please provide the sensor model, water type, wiring photos, power supply voltage, controller or gateway model, communication settings, installation photos and abnormal data screenshots. With this information, YexSensor can help identify whether the problem is related to wiring, communication, calibration, installation or water condition.
