Project location: Urban inner river section in Suzhou, Jiangsu, China
Application: Urban river surface water monitoring / river patrol / water environment management
Monitoring parameters: pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, temperature
Project type: Solar-powered bank-side water quality monitoring station

Project Background
In the morning, the river was quiet, with only patrol staff and a few residents passing by. In the past, this urban inner river relied mainly on manual inspection and periodic sampling. Patrol staff could observe black water or floating objects and send samples to a laboratory, but they could not see continuous changes throughout the day.
For the management team, the difficult part was often not a single test result, but sudden changes. Rainwater overflow, upstream drainage fluctuation, dredging disturbance or short night-time discharge may change water quality within several hours. If only manual sampling is used, many abnormal events are missed and become hard to trace later.
Site Installation
YexSensor arranged a solar-powered surface water online monitoring station on the riverbank. The unit was installed near the guardrail. The solar panel supplies power, the control box integrates data acquisition, communication and power management, and the water quality sensors are lowered into the river through cables for long-term unattended monitoring.
Solar power was selected because it was not convenient to install municipal power along the riverbank. The solar panel and battery reduce civil work and wiring. This installation method is flexible for urban rivers, township rivers, lake banks, wetland parks and remote surface water points.
Installation Structure
The project uses fixed bank-side installation. The control box is mounted on a pole for easy maintenance, while sensor cables are fixed along the bank and lowered to a suitable water depth. The compact structure does not occupy the walking area and has limited impact on the surrounding landscape.
YexSensor Products Used in the Project
| Product / Configuration | Project Role |
|---|---|
| Online pH sensor | Monitors acidity and alkalinity changes to support abnormal discharge and water stability judgment |
| Online dissolved oxygen sensor | Evaluates oxygen condition for black-odor water warning and ecological assessment |
| Online turbidity sensor | Detects runoff after rain, construction disturbance, dredging impact or suspended solids increase |
| Conductivity sensor | Helps identify external water inflow, drainage fluctuation or ion concentration changes |
| Temperature sensor | Supports trend analysis and temperature compensation for some parameters |
| Data acquisition control box | Connects sensors, collects data, manages power and uploads communication data |
| 4G wireless module | Uploads field data to the platform for remote viewing and historical tracing |
| Solar power system | Provides continuous power for river sites without municipal electricity |
Project Result
After operation, managers can view real-time data and historical curves on the platform. When turbidity rises suddenly, dissolved oxygen remains low, or pH and conductivity fluctuate abnormally, the platform can remind operators to check the site. Compared with one-time manual testing, continuous monitoring better explains when the problem happened, how long it lasted and how the water recovered.
During one post-rain inspection, the station recorded a short-term turbidity increase together with conductivity fluctuation. Operators used the data time window to review upstream discharge points and narrow the investigation area. The online system helped the team discover changes earlier, instead of waiting until visible problems appeared.
Application Scenarios
This solution is suitable for urban rivers, landscape water, lake banks, wetland parks, township rivers, areas near river discharge outlets, auxiliary monitoring of surface water assessment sections, and front-end monitoring points for river chief systems and smart water platforms.
Summary
The core value of this surface water project is upgrading manual patrol into continuous online monitoring. With water quality sensors, a data acquisition control box, wireless communication and solar power, YexSensor helps managers understand river water quality changes more quickly and supports pollution warning, patrol scheduling and treatment evaluation with data.
