Singapore Tuas Port Nearshore Seawater Monitoring Case: A Water Quality Sensor on a Survey Boat

2026-07-11

Project location: Nearshore waters of Tuas Port, Singapore
Application: Port survey / dredging impact assessment / temporary shipborne monitoring
Monitoring parameters: Turbidity, pH, salinity, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, temperature
Project type: Port seawater environmental monitoring / system integration project

Nearshore seawater survey around Singapore Tuas Port

Project Background

In the early morning, Tuas Port was still covered by a light haze. Cargo vessels waited near the channel while the survey boat slowly left the berth. The task was clear: during dredging, vessel operation and nearshore construction, the project team needed continuous records of seawater quality changes, especially turbidity and dissolved oxygen. The site had previously relied on manual sampling. Laboratory results were accurate, but they arrived late, and short periods of water disturbance were difficult to understand on the same day.

Site Story

Before the survey started, the engineering team divided monitoring points into three groups: areas close to the work zone, points along the channel and relatively stable reference areas. The survey boat followed a fixed route every day. Sensors were lowered from the side of the boat below the water surface, while cables were fixed to the deck guardrail and brackets. The black probe in the site photo shows this temporary shipborne installation method. It does not require seabed piling or long-term use of port structures, so it is well suited for port surveys, short-term assessments and repeated multi-point checks.

Shipborne water quality sensor installation at Singapore Tuas Port

Why Shipborne Monitoring Was Selected

Port water quality does not change at only one fixed point. Tides, vessel propulsion, dredged sediment and rainfall runoff can create differences between areas. A shipborne system allows the same sensor set to cover several cross-sections and form a comparable water quality route within the same day. For system integrators, it is also easier to deliver: sensors, controller, data logger and power box can be packaged as a portable system with fast installation and reuse in other port or nearshore projects.

YexSensor Products Used in the Project

Product / ConfigurationRole in the Project
Online turbidity sensorContinuously records suspended solids caused by dredging, vessel disturbance or runoff
Online pH sensorTracks seawater acidity and alkalinity for water stability judgment
Salinity / conductivity sensorIdentifies tidal exchange, water mass movement and freshwater inflow effects
Online dissolved oxygen sensorMonitors oxygen condition in nearshore seawater for ecological risk assessment
Temperature sensorSupports trend analysis and parameter compensation
Multi-parameter controller / data loggerProvides local display, storage and optional RS485 Modbus communication
4G gateway or data acquisition boxUploads survey data remotely for project viewing and archiving
Shipborne bracket and cable fixing accessoriesUsed for temporary installation and cable protection; installation accessories only

Project Result

After deployment, the team could view turbidity, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen and temperature during the survey. When the boat passed waters near dredging activity, turbidity changes were continuously recorded. When tides brought different water masses, salinity and conductivity helped interpret the trend. Compared with one-time sampling, continuous data explains where the change started, how long it lasted and whether it returned to the reference level.

Application Scenarios

This solution is suitable for port dredging impact assessment, nearshore construction water quality inspection, offshore survey near aquaculture areas, checks around terminal discharge outlets, environmental acceptance comparison, short-term seawater research and mobile monitoring projects for port, environmental and maritime customers.

Summary

The value of this Singapore Tuas Port project is not simply putting a sensor into seawater. It upgrades scattered manual sampling into a traceable, repeatable and explainable water quality route. With seawater-resistant sensors, field controller and data acquisition equipment, YexSensor helps project teams see water quality changes faster and gives reports, acceptance work and operation discussions better data support.
